Charles Coulson Rich was born on August 21, 1809, in Campbell County, Kentucky. He was instructed in the Mormon faith by Lyman Wight and baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by George M. Hinckle in 1832. In 1838 he married Sarah D. Pea, the first of his six wives. Rich lived in Calfwell County, Missouri, and fought in the Battle of Crooked River. Lewis Granger, lawyer and politician, was born in Ohio in 1819. In 1838 he graduated from Jefferson College, Pennsylvania; he then went to Missouri where he practiced law. In 1849, the Granger family moved to Los Angeles where Lewis continued to practice law. Shortly after moving to Los Angeles, Granger was appointed District Attorney.
